English

We use language to develop our views and opinions of the world around us. Through high-quality education pupils, at All Saints’, will learn to communicate fluently in spoken and written form. The development of reading and listening skills enables our pupils to acquire new knowledge and develop emotionally, culturally and intellectually.

In Foundation Stage and Key Stage One, we use the ‘Read, Write, Inc.’ programme to deliver phonics.  When pupils have developed a secure knowledge of phonemes then they progress to the ‘Language and Literacy’ scheme.

In both Key Stage One and Two, English lessons are linked to high-quality literature. Units of work are organised into genres and lessons build upon prior knowledge and skills. The table below shows the units of work undertaken by each year group.

Grammar, handwriting and spelling are taught to all classes with our approach building upon and extending the skills that the children already have. Pupils have weekly spelling tests.
