English
We use language to develop our views and opinions of the world around us. Through high-quality teaching and learning opportunities, pupils at All Saints’ will learn to communicate fluently in spoken and written form.
The development of a range of English skills ‘opens doors’ for children to access content and information across all areas of the curriculum.
In Foundation Stage and Key Stage One, we use the ‘Read, Write, Inc.’ programme to deliver phonics. Alongside and following on from the teaching of phonics, we use a range of teaching tools. These support development of: reading comprehension and understanding of texts, writing skills (for different purposes), vocabulary and grammar knowledge and speaking and listening skills.
In both Key Stage One and Two, English lessons are linked to high-quality literature. Texts will be chosen which provide a rich language model, which develop book talk and provide inspiration for writing. Lessons build upon prior knowledge and skills and also introduce new learning concepts.
Grammar, handwriting and spelling are taught with a systematic approach. Pupils have spelling lessons and assessments from Year 2 onwards using the Read Write Inc. Spelling scheme (this builds on from the spelling taught in EYFS, Year 1 and early Year 2 through Read Write Inc. Phonics).
Our handwriting is taught with a structured approach using the Letterjoin scheme.
